Workshops

The Grange Farm School provides an education for all ages. While our residential students are getting day to day hands-on experience, we also host weekend workshops for community members and Grangers. The weekend workshops typically last for Saturday and Sunday with an option for tent camping on Saturday night. Meals are shared and the schedule includes walking tours as well as lectures from staff and experts.

Upcoming workshops:

Build Your Own Cold Frame Workshop & Vernal Equinox Lecture

Come learn how to build your very own cold frame at the Grange Farm School on Ridgewood Ranch!

Saturday, March 21st!

Using reclaimed windows donated from the LIttle Lake Grange or bringing your own, we will be splitting the day into two work sessions; 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm with an hour lunch, and lecture on the Vernal Equinox and Rituals surrounding the first degree "faith" of the Grange. Takashi Yogi and Annie Waters will be leading the lecture.

You will be learning and constructing a cold frame of your own to take home with you the same day. If you're not familiar a cold frame is a transparent-roofed enclosure, built low to the ground, used to protect plants from adverse weather, primarily cold. Used for season extension!!

We are giving an option at $50 dollars to participate in the workshop with all materials included; windows, hardware, 2x2's, siding, and tools. Although, tools may be limited so we suggest that you bring your own measuring tape, cordless drill, and pencil.

There is also a second option to attend the workshop at $30 dollars and bring with you your own materials or to just watch and learn without building anything if you so choose. Both options include informative and instructive workshop, lunch, tour, and lecture.

So come celebrate your Spring Equinox with us here at the Farm School and take away some new found knowledge and an awesome cold frame to extend your growing season! We look forward to seeing you there!

Get Down to Business with Holistic Management

California Whole Farm/Ranch Business Planning Course

January 17, January 30-31, and March 6-7

Register here

This in depth course is being offered in California as part of HMI’s Whole Farm/Ranch Business Planning Series. While many folks are attracted to farming and ranching because of their love of the land or their desire to do truly meaningful work, farming and ranching is still a business. At HMI we know that to create a sustainable, healthy agricultural enterprise, you need to run it like a business. So, we’ve created our Whole Farm/Ranch Business Planning course to give both new and experienced farmers and ranchers the knowledge and tools they need to do just that. While many of our other programs teach both business and production techniques, this one will focus on the business side of your business.

Our five-day course is taught over approximately six weeks, so you have plenty of time to start applying what you’ve learned, while you’re still enrolled in the course. Naturally, we teach the Holistic Management Farming/Ranching system that’s been helping ag producers build sustainable farms and ranchers for thirty years. Participants will be develop a draft business plan, a whole farm/ranch goal, as well as both financial and marketing plans.

Due to grant funding the cost for this program (valued at $800) is being offered at $100 per person. A limited number of full scholarships are available bringing the registration cost down to zero. If you’d like to be considered for a scholarship, fill out the Scholarship Application and return to Julie Fierro, HMI Education Manager Lunch is included.
